Advanced Resolve Metrics

A stack of NHL metrics that don't exist anywhere else. Box scores tell you how many. Public advanced metrics tell you how good. Ours pinpoint what kind of good — slot-pass playmakers vs rush forwards, Selke-tier shutdown vs counting-stat stars, real high-danger goalie skill vs system effects.

Metric definitions (5 NHL metrics)

Every Resolve NHL advanced metric, with what it measures and how to read it. Each metric had to pass a face-validity gate before shipping — if a metric ranked someone obviously wrong, it got cut. Grouped by side (offense / defense / two-way / team).

Offense

HD Passes per 60 (RRPG)(RRPG v2)

Passes into the high-danger area, per 60.

What it measures: Manually-tracked high-danger passes per 60 minutes of 5v5 ice time. Catches the playmakers who manipulate defenders into the slot — not the same thing as raw assists.

How to read it: Sidney Crosby career #1 (4.49 HD/60 over 1,977 5v5 minutes). Artemi Panarin #2 career, #1 on Slot Passes/60. Crosby's 2019-20 single-season record at 5.51 HD/60. Connor McDavid #7 career (3.04) — real but below Crosby and Panarin; McDavid's value is rush-oriented, Crosby/Panarin manipulate the slot.

Power Play Quarterback Index (PPQ)(PPQ)

Who's running the PP1 unit — and who should be.

What it measures: Composite of first-assists, total assists, and individual expected goals on the power play, all per 60 minutes. ≥120 PP minutes career to qualify. Surfaces the actual PP1 quarterbacks across forwards and defensemen.

How to read it: McDavid #1 (10.14), Mitch Marner #2 (9.40), Nikita Kucherov #3 (9.33). Top defensemen: Hedman, Quinn Hughes, Adam Fox, Cale Makar. Lane Hutson cracked top-12 as a rookie — a real find. 5 of 10 elite hits on the locked face-validity list.

per-player (PP-qualified)live

Zone Entry Carry %(Carry %)

Drives the puck in with possession vs dumps it.

What it measures: Percentage of a player's zone entries done with possession (carry-in) instead of dumping the puck in. Tracks the offensive style at the blue line — possession-first vs north-south chip-and-chase.

How to read it: Top forwards: McDavid, Patrick Kane, Panarin, Barkov, Matthews, Pettersson. Top D: Roman Josi #70 (61.1% carry), TJ Brodie, Hedman, Doughty, Orlov, Gostisbehere. Bottom: Niskanen 10.4% career (stay-at-home dumper), Lindell, Carlo, Manning, Gudas.

per-player (≥80 entries, ≥2 seasons)live
Defense

High-Danger Save % Above Expected (HDSV+)(HDSV+ v2)

Saves on the dangerous chances — the stat that doesn't lie.

What it measures: Goalie save percentage on high-danger shots above the expected save rate. Filtered to ≥500 high-danger career shots so short-sample backups don't beat real elites.

How to read it: Ilya Sorokin #1 (+0.110 over 720 HD shots, 4 seasons). Sam Montembeault #2 (+0.104 — undervalued Habs story). Shesterkin, Vasilevskiy, Swayman, Bobrovsky, Oettinger all elite. Hellebuyck #12 mid-pack — Vezina reputation rests on overall save%, not HD. Ullmark #18 bottom-third — his 2023 Vezina was a BOS defensive-system effect.

per-goalie (≥500 HD shots career)live

Shutdown Impact (LAGD)(LAGF)

Net goal-differential on-ice vs off-ice — the Selke stat.

What it measures: Net goal differential per 60 when the forward is on the ice minus when he's off. Surfaces shutdown forwards — checking-line centers, not elite scorers. Elite scorers face top opposition and don't surface here by design.

How to read it: Morgan Barron #1 (+3.69 net GF/60). Adam Lowry #2 (+3.44) — confirms his 2024 Selke trophy. Kampf, Faksa, Sissons, Dowd, Goodrow, Trenin, Nosek, Appleton — face-valid shutdown depth chart. Read this as a Selke-tier signal; do NOT read it as "better than McDavid."
